MOORESVILLE, N.C., July 11 (Nationwide Times) — A recall affecting about 554,780 Kobalt 24V and 48V yard power tools sold at Lowe’s is centered on one problem: the tools’ USB-C rechargeable lithium-ion batteries can short-circuit if they are charged through the USB-C port while still inserted in the tool. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says that can create a fire hazard and a risk of serious injury.
What is being recalled?
The recall covers a range of Kobalt yard tools sold nationwide at Lowe’s stores and on Lowes.com from January 2026 through May 2026. The recalled products include string trimmers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, chainsaws, pruning saws, power cleaners and bristle brush kits.
The affected batteries were sold in 3.0Ah, 4.0Ah, 5.0Ah, 6.0Ah and 8.0Ah sizes and include a USB-C charging port. Amp-hours, or Ah, are a measure of how much charge a battery can hold.
Why is the recall happening?
According to the CPSC, charging the batteries through the USB-C port while they remain in the yard tool can cause the batteries to short-circuit. Greenworks North America LLC, doing business as Greenworks Tools of Mooresville, North Carolina, is the importer named in the recall notice.
The company had received 34 reports of batteries smoking, sparking or catching fire during that kind of charging. No injuries or property damage had been reported in the notice.
What should owners do?
Consumers should stop charging the recalled batteries through the USB-C port while the batteries are inserted in the tools. Greenworks Tools is offering a free replacement battery without a USB-C port, plus a charger adapter, an updated product manual, a warning label and a prepaid shipping label to return the recalled battery.
How can someone check whether a tool is included?
The recall is for Kobalt 24V and 48V yard power tools with USB-C rechargeable batteries sold at Lowe’s during the recall period. The CPSC recall notice identifies the affected brand, battery sizes and product categories, and Lowe’s has posted recall and product-safety information for customers.
The recall is number 26-611.
