ANNAPOLIS, Md., June 22 (DC Times Online) — Maryland election officials removed Ian Andre Roberts from the state voter rolls on June 2, more than two years after the case began drawing scrutiny, according to records cited in reporting.
Republican Maryland Delegate Matt Morgan, who chairs the Maryland House Freedom Caucus, said the episode shows why “Marylanders have lost faith in our elections.” He said the state moved too slowly and has not been transparent about how Roberts stayed registered.
Maryland voter-registration records cited in the reporting show Roberts checked the citizenship box and signed under penalty of perjury on registration forms twice. The records also show he had been registered twice, had been on the rolls for more than a decade, and that absentee ballots were mailed to him.
The reporting does not show whether Roberts ever cast a ballot in Maryland, and it does not include the Maryland State Board of Elections’ full explanation for the June 2 removal.
In January, Maryland elections administrator Jared DeMarinis warned against “improper cancellation” when discussing the risk of removing eligible voters. Republican Rep. Bryan Steil said the investigation would continue and said Maryland had not fully answered questions about whether Roberts received a live ballot or whether the state had tightened its citizenship checks.
